RE: New Laptop, XP or VISTA ?

I just wasn't ready to switch to an OS that needed 2G of RAM to start. In a few years that will be a tiny RAM... but today it's not and XP does just fine on 1G.
I was able to buy one more PC with XP so now all 4 PC's I maintain are on XP. Finally all the same... so I'd like to just enjoy that for a year or so.
After that LINUX is a possibility or maybe OX-X... I will resist VISTA as long as I can and work to be as OS independent as possible with the things I do daily on PC's.

RE: GPS Virgin - Feedback appreciated

I'm still miff'ed with Garmin because my 2610 died after 4 years and I expected a longer usable life than that.
But... I am happy with my nuvi (I picked the 265w there are many many nuvis that all seem pretty good). The nuvi's meet most of the stated criteria here.
Two observations... with the new GPS (like nuvi)you can add POI's now pretty easily places like http://www.poi-factory.com/ make that simple.
...and - I've tried the GPS connected to a PC thing before and would not try it again (and we travel with 4 portable PC's and aircard Internet anyway). For my purposes the PC with GPS was unusable while the latest crop of car navigation GPS are ideal tools.

RE: Omnidirectional antenna for digital TV?

Ok, where does it get it's signal from
The batwing is bi-directional In theory the "Front to back" ration is 1/1, in practice, very close
I asked this question and got a different answer.

RE: Cordless Drill

any cheap rechargeable will work for those times that a cordless one is needed.
I've got 4 corded drills including a drywall screw gun, hammer-drill, 3/8 and 1/2 drills and they all have good purposes. But I find I "need" cordless for 90% of what I drill because it's usually just a few quick things here and there and dragging out a cord would take more time than the job itself. I found a huge difference between a small cordless and my DeWalt.
Oh yes... only the DeWalt earned a place in my FW.

RE: Cordless Drill

I'd say go for the new drill
I was afraid of that... just seems such a waste since the drill and charger still work fine.

Cordless Drill

I've gotten a lot of good advice on this forum... so I'd like to try with this topic even though it's really only tangentially related to RV's. I'll defend it by saying that there are LOTS of uses for a cordless drill in my RV - so I consider it a "must have" tool.
Mine is an older DeWalt 18V and one of the batteries will no longer hold a charge. Once the second battery goes it's useless so I was asking Santa to look for two new batteries. Santa googled and found that the going price for a new 18V battery is nearly $90 for ONE, while the going price for an entire new drill (including TWO new batteries and a charger) is $160...
Am I missing it or do I just buy a new cordless drill when my batteries stop taking a charge?

RE: Propane Tank(s) waking me up

Ours whines when the heat runs, and has woken me up too. I was told it could be:
1. Normal
2. Faulty regulator
3. Improper purging of tanks
The tanks were filled during the PDI and I do not know how they were purged. It is my hope that after we empty and re-fill them once the problem will go away - so far we have not used up a tank yet. If the problem continues after the tanks are re-filled I may try remounting the regulator to reduce the noise.
I've got until next summer to replace the regulator under warranty too. And... may be posting here again for ideas as well. DW is hard of hearing and doesn't hear it, they kids sleep in the back and don't hear it either - so it's mostly me who has a problem.

RE: out of state purchase

The best place to get the FACTS is the appropriate division of each State.
Good advice. I sold from NJ to PA and the state web sites had all the info we needed to be prepared. To get a 30 day transit tag in NJ the buyer needed the signed over title, proof of insurance, proof of residency outside NJ and $5.

RE: Wondering why ...

Do your homework. Read the manual. I you're still confused or something doesn't make sense, ask away.
btw - my first RV had a manual of sorts... but it was for everything they made and said something like - "it will look something like this or maybe different"
My second RV had no manual, just a (huge) stack of install documents from various sub-assembly vendors. Try to figure out how to work an entertainment center from an install guide!! I wish you luck on that.
So the industry itself does contribute to owner confusion - perhaps on the assumptions that either dealers or forums can bridge the gap.

RE: Wondering why ...

Sorry if I offended, but it still seems ridiculous to me to think that some folks on here are plunking down many thousands of dollars to buy something that they admit they know nothing about.
But I guess they wanted one... different people can tolerate different amounts of ambiguity. Some surely assume that if someone else can do it... they can too - provided they can figure out whatever it is they are asking about. The Internet is a cool place - lots of info! It's the fool who doesn't join forums and ask!
Your observation reminds me of a friend of mine who long ago invested in GPS based equipment to do surveying. Another friend of mine was asking detailed questions and the first guy - who had basically just invested 6 months of profits on this unproven gadget -- said he was not sure but he would make it work somehow... he was sure it was the right thing to do. btw - he was right. The friend with the detailed questions was astounded. People make decisions differently (google meyers briggs) and just because it's different doesn't always make it wrong or foolish.
I'm also glad that people with no RV experience will take the plunge. I sold my last rig (sight unseen) to a guy who called me the week before he picked it up (he'd made a down payment and financed it by then) to ask about a FW hitch and brake controller.

RE: Keeping window trim white

What is the outside, different materials need different products.
The main body is some kind of laminate - generically a fiberglass I guess. I did not pay the extra money for gelcoat. There are a variety of plastic parts and the slide seals that all seem like they could benefit from some kinds of conditioners/protectants.

RE: Bighorn 3055

We like our Heartland, we are in ours full time now. We've had issues, but all annoyance items - nothing big.
The forum is excellent - the manufacturer and some component suppliers read it and actually answer questions. All manufacturers should learn from that.
Get a price from RVWholersalers.com to help you decide if you are getting a fair deal.

RE: Closing of threads

I just read the thread. I guess I missed the problem and there was no moderators note in the thread when it was closed. Not trying to second guess or argue here... but it is easier to play by the rules when infractions are explained.
Hopefully a moderator can chime in on this.

RE: Maximum Life of a Tire

interesting, thanx.
Remember that "age" is according to the DOT code on the side, not when you got them. I'd heard 5-7 years before, so maximum of 10 years and inspect at 6 years is consistent, though a bit more lenient. Then again, consider the source - the tire industry is not eager to adopt any clear age guideline since it would make their inventory control more difficult.

RE: What tip do you have to save us money to keep camping?

We eat out less and plan the meals in advance - you can still eat very well but will spend a lot less that way.
For another idea... yesterday our family got haircuts at a beauty school. We paid $6 each and got fine haircuts (then again I am not picky). There's also a time you can go for free... but I think the wait is longer and the students even less trained. It was interesting - the student began with my cut on their own, then an instructor came over and told them what they'd done wrong and fixed it. That process was repeated 3 times with the instructor finally finishing my haircut - so the cut took about twice as long as normal. I learned a lot about how hair is supposed to be cut.

Keeping window trim white

On our last rig the plastic trim around the windows began to yellow and began to mildew over time. I guess it wasn't UV stable and I'm not sure why the mildew liked it.
I've read of a few ways to make it white again... but now that I've got a new rig again -- is there any way to KEEP it white?
While I'm asking... what other products do you all like to keep the outside of your new rig looking new?

RE: What's in a name?

I don't see any reason to chastise and correct "camper" as a term - though I usually use it. DW does call it our camper and people have asked how we can "live in a camper" (they have not seen it) and I'll tell them it's really a house on wheels.
As noted by others... it's hard to argue that most times you are staying at a "campground" -- though I've seen some called "RV Resorts" now.
Personally I think it's interesting to live in a place where $400,000 motor homes and 25 year old travel trailers are parked. I've met nice people who live in each.
